From the description it sounds like exactly what my son has - and maybe it would
be interesting for you to hear our story and get a perspective for an untreated
case.

12 years ago I didn't have any idea what a tt is - and just later I recognized
it and could see he has quite a lot of the problems assiciated with tt (mouth
breathing, frequent ear and sinus infections, a minor speech problem with
rolling the r that is required in Bulgarian etc), so we decided to clip it when
he was 10 years old. Interestingly enough, I didn't have even slightly sore
nipples with him, maybe because he could lift the tip of the tongue just enough
(I had severely damaged nipples with his little sister who has a type 3 tt).

Off we went to clip what appeared to be a simple and classis heart shaped type 1
TT... the doctor even wanted to do it without local anestesia, it looked so
simple (luckily we insisted on anestesia!). But it turned out he could lift just
the very tip and after the tip was released, we could see his tongue was
literally glued to the floor of the mouth at the sides and the "body". 40
minutes later, after what appeared an infinite cutting and cutting and cutting
with the laser the doctor said there is too much scar tissue now and she is not
seeing what she is doing anymore, so we stopped.

It turns out his tongue is still NOT completely released and I am very sorry
there was no one to do a proper examination before that and advise us to do
surgery instead of trying the simple clipping. The procedure was very stressful
and his healing has been slow and painful, so my son and his father are
adamantly opposed against a second procedure and I feel as if all the pain was
for nothing, really... but maybe he will be able to kiss a little bit better
though, as he is able to stretch the tongue farther now :) Thank God for little
blessings :)

I am still amazed at what he could do despite the restricted tongue... I would
have expected quite a lot more speech (not to mention breastfeeding) problems
with this degree of restriction and with all the specific sounds our language
requires, but he has always been one to talk too much and maybe this extra
practice has helped him to compensate and learn to speak very well, with a good
pronounciation not only in Bulgarian, but in English too.

Subject: anterior and posterior tt

I saw a baby like this a few years ago. That baby's tongue seemed literally
glued to the floor of his mouth, front to back, side to side. No elevation, no
cupping, very little mobility. Mother had severely lacerated, "hamburger"
nipples. The breastfeeding medicine specialist I sent this couplet to told me
later it was the worse TT she'd ever seen. I suspect this MD is the same one
Michele's daughter went to... ;-) We are very lucky here in the Pacific
Northwest, USA, aren't we? :-)
