I do not work with the Amish, but we do have pedal pumps available for mothers of NICU babies when we suspect we will not get a Symphony loaner back. I have used them in many situations for years, and they are quick and effective. You do need a spring to adapt the Lactina equipment for the pedal pump.

Unfortunately, some mothers to whom we provide the pumps often refuse to use them. Everyone seems to want the "fancy", expensive pumps. As we lose loaner pumps every year, we are reluctant to lose any more. Symphonies are expensive. Mothers can also be provided with a manual pump and encouraged to use the pumps available at the hospital when they come in. We seldom use the pedal pumps any more.
