In the state of NY it is illegal for health care professionals to give referral fees. It is called fee splitting.

It is why I am no longer working at one of the places where I was teaching - the owner has a TV show and wanted me to sign a contract that would have them book my clients and they would mark it up. 

I have been asked to give referral fees in the past and don't feel I need to share my hard earned and deserved fees.
