I spoke with a mom yesterday who underwent double mastectomy due to BRCA
genetic risk of breast cancer and is now pregnant and due in September. She
called to discuss her options for obtaining donor milk and I asked her if
she had thought of supplementing at breast (she had reconstructive plastic
surgery). She gave me permission to post to see if anyone has worked with
a mom who did this and what her experience was. This mom breastfed her
first child for at least a year. I explained the benefits of breastfeeding
with supplementer for baby and her and she seemed open to this possibility.
If anyone has helped a mom in similar circumstances could you please
respond to me privately as well as to the list. I am forwarding this to Diana
West, as well. I feel for this mom and will be following up with her over
the next several months and beyond. I have worked with adoptive moms who
made little if any milk and shared this with her, as well. I realize the
emotional impact all this must have on her, but think breastfeeding this baby
could also be healing for her. Any thoughts re this are welcome.
