If casein is the baby's problem, I wonder if they have tried the popular
formula that contains only hydrolyzed whey protein?
It made a huge difference for my granddaughter. There is one that contains
probiotics. I hope the Elecare works, but it is awfully expensive. That
poor baby needs something! Besides the present, misery in infancy can have a
serious negative effect on him in the future.
~~~I agree. I see this family struggling emotionally as much as physically.
They were already near the breaking point with their older child being so
allergic and asthmatic, on medications, being so careful all the time. Now
they have this new baby as well with his own issues. At least at this
point, the mom's supply hovers in the area of the baby needing only about 2-6
ounces of formula a day, most recently at the 2 end. The pediatrician is
aware ( via me, with mom's permission) with specifics of the mother's choices
and knows to monitor for continued weight gain in the normal range, just in
case. This is a huge improvement over her first baby's situation, who was
much more formula-dependent in those early months. I also passed on the
information about the whey protein based formula. It was the traditional foods
person who suggested that the issue is solely casein-related. Since she
seems to know little about actual breastfeeding and lactation ( other than
it's traditional and she told this mom never to feed her baby formula or have
him immunized and other things that do not fit this mother's life) she may
know something I don't, or she may not. I do know my son reacted more to
casein than whey as a toddler and child for many years, but would get fluid
in his ears and lose hearing anytime he ingested any dairy for years, that
was after the early episodes of ear infections, ... I stopped dairy myself
but the hospital had given him formula behind my back the first 36 hours he
was born, and my mother-in-law gave him a glass of milk at aged 10 months
which seemed to set this whole thing off. One will never really know
though... I do know my son was born into a family of dairy farmers and it was NOT
easy...:)
Peace,
Judy
