jessica,

my 5th child is just like this. i am running across more and more
babies in the same boat in my work w/ bfing moms, too. i think you are
right in suspecting corn allergy. my son also could not tolerate the
neocate products the dr.s tried to give as a supplement (once he was
on solid foods) to help him grow and he is severely allergic to even
the most minute traces of corn. we have tested him through a therapy
called SLIT (sub lingual immunotherapy) and discovered that he still
reacts to 1 part corn in 1 *billion* parts water, a sensitivity his
dr.s said was not possible until they saw it w/ their own eyes. they
also had said it is not possible to be allergic or have a reaction to
neocate.

my child has many other allergies besides corn, dairy, soy, goat's
milk, egg, etc... and i wonder if this baby does, also. can the mother
have him tested for food allergies so she knows for sure what to rule
out? (the diaper description makes me wonder about gluten...) i am
wondering how he does well on donor milk from more than one woman if
he is so sensitive he cannot even tolerate neocate? surely these women
aren't all eliminating corn, dairy and soy from their diets? or is
corn not as prevalent in the foods there as here, in america?
you are also wise to advise her to avoid goat's milk as there is a
very high correlation b/t that and cow's milk allergy.

i am sorry to tell you there is absolutely no other mass-produced
product i know of that a baby allergic to corn, dairy and soy can
take. there is nothing my baby could have taken except human milk w/
those things eliminated. are you sure he couldn't be taught to suck
properly and bring mom's supply up? it sounded like possibly her
supply dwindled b/c he couldn't latch/suckle well enough to keep her
supply up? perhaps if that were remedied, she could relactate and have
the peace of mind of being her own supply as well as eliminating the
things she knows are harmful to her baby. if that's not possible, what
about her pumping or hand expressing to bring back supply and provide
milk for him?

the last thing i can think of would be to make my own formula if all
other options were closed to me. perhaps rice milk based. mom would
have to research very carefully to make sure she knew precisely what
this entails.

but i just feel like i'm missing something if he is growing well on
donor milk w/ no special dietary restrictions...i'd simply try to
access a larger donor pool if that's the case and keep him getting
all the other sundry benefits of human milk!
