One of my OB physicians who specialized in reproductive endocrinology explained to me that the body will convert progesterone into estrogen, so progesterone CAN affect supply. Another OB physician's answer is to tell mothers to pump and store lots in advance so that they will have enough when their milk supply decreases due to the BCP. If this is well-known by practicing physicians, why do we have the pharm industry saying that it has no effect on supply?

Subject: Progesterone-only contraceptives - when is it not enough?

One of the Public Health Nurses in our area is very upset with the local midwives who are prescribing progestin-only contraceptives even when breastfeeding mothers are giving 1 - 2 bottles of formula / day (they are unable to pump adequately at work).

What would be your recommendation/thought - when is this not appropriate.

My thought was that some women are unable to tolerate Estrogens and therefore use the mini-pill exclusively even when NOT breastfeeding...but what has been your experience/studies?
