Just curious: they don't fear to be sued for giving other fluids then breastmilk and use artificial nipples in children whose parents chose to breastfeed, where this practice is known to be harmfull, but they do fear to get sued when a rare occasion of TEF occurs and a child might get some colotrum in his lungs, shich is known to be non-hazardous?
I've got to do a lot more learning on logics, I guess, because I don't see it.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC in PP, LC lecturer, being a bit grumpy in southern Netherlands.

Hello All,
I need some urgent help! Our hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee is "thinking" about changing our policy for breastfed infants. Last week we had a baby with a TE fistula who was breastfed. Administration is under the impression that ALL babies need to have "sips of sterile water with an artificial nipple" to protect the hospital from liability.

I know how I (and all of you feel about this)...but, I am looking for some really quick resources to back up my argument.

I also know I should search the archives before asking...but my daughter had a baby 8 weeks ago and is still bleeding and may need a D&C today. Administration has been known to change a policy on very short notice.

Thank you so much for your help!
Marie Ivey, BSN, RN, CLC (and hoping to be an IBCLC after this summer!)
