"This reminds me of the breast pads that are designed to inhibit MER. One
brand is Lily Padz. I've always been cautious of them, thinking that
leaking is the breast's safety valve of sorts. I wonder how they impact
nipple trauma."

A few years ago I had a client whose nipples took something like 6 mo to
heal the first time. They had eroded so badly, and eroded so badly again
starting out with her second, that she leaked continuously in addition to
having hamburger for nipples. (Eroded past the sphincter muscles? We didn't
know, and I wasn't involved the first time.)

We settled on Lily Padz as a way of controlling the leaking while she
healed, and they worked beautifully. Sample size of one, but healing
progressed just fine even with many hours of Lily Padz each day, and she
went on to nurse without them.

They might even work over breast incisions that drain a lot of milk during
nursing. But you're right; most of the time leaking is probably a safety
valve.
