I was a pre-conference speaker at the AWHONN annual conference this year and had similar concerns. When I emailed the national AWHONN office, this was the reply: "I understand your concern about a formula company possibly supporting your 4-hr workshop on breastfeeding. We have moved from a model of seeking support for specific educational sessions, to one in which sponsors support the convention as a whole, contributing to overall operating expenses. No formula company will provide direct support for your session; your honorarium, travel expenses and lodging will be paid for by AWHONN." I also, of course, signed a letter that I had received no industry support. I believe to advance the field of lactation we need a strong presence at education conferences. I think attending but bringing your own lunch is a great idea. And, you may want to check out what kind of monetary support Pula Meier is getting from industry before you boycott...she is a wonderful speaker.
