Where I work, in what I would say is a mid size hospital, we teach hand
expression of colostrum/milk on nipples and allow to air dry and then
lanolin after that if they prefer. La Leche League has these nice sore
nipple handouts with a packet of lanolin attached. That is something you may
want to look into as it may be cheaper? I agree offering help and a '"fix"
does go a long way in helping mothers feel cared for. I usually also
explain to moms that breastmilk does a great job in healing their
nipples...but I think for a lot of moms the lanolin is just very soothing.
