I hope this may help regarding the Mother coming to South Africa and in particular visiting the Kruger National Park.
As Dr. Nancy Wight suggested, Malarone is the recommended prevenative drug for entry into a malaria area.. the active ingredients are Atovaquone (250mg) and Proguanil (100mg). The elimination half-life of Atovaquone (adult) is 32 - 84 hours and Progaunil is 12-21 hours. Malarone should be taken 1-2 days before entering the Malaria area, daily during the stay in the park and for 7 days after leaving the park. It is the drug of choice but not recommended for breastfeeding mothers but one needs to keep in mind the long half life and she should express her milk and discard it until safe after the last dose.
I hope Mom enjoys her trip to South Africa, it's a very hot time of the year so lots of sunscreen with a 50 to 100 SPF is important.
