RE: how/why sites show up on the first page of a google search.
It is my understanding that a number of factors determine where a site shows
up when certain search terms are googled.
I have a relative who is studying this, in order to manipulate Google to
have his business show up on the first or second page.
He does things like use certain words multiple times on his website. He
writes articles on his topics, and posts them all over the internet on
various blogs, forums, etc, with links to his website. The articles can't
be identical, but he changes them a bit. He posts comments on blogs, with
links to his website.
All of this is done not only to help actual PEOPLE find his website if they
are reading that article, but it more important to have the Google "spiders"
(computer programs that crawl around the internet and look through web
sites) to find his links, and each time they do so, the give him more
"points" - (create the impression that his website is important and used a
lot), and Google will then rank him higher in a search.
My relative can actually see his efforts at work - when he has time to post
a lot of articles, comments etc, he can see his website move closer to the
top, when he searchs Google for his target search terms.
SO, my conclusion would be that Abbot has savvy web programmers that are
embedding search words in their articles, and posting in other areas, that
cause their site to come up first in a Google search.
Or I could be completely wrong and perhaps Google does accept payment to
ensure that Abbot comes up first in a search.
