Sorry, I rounded incorrectly -- the percent of the US budget allocated to research that might help the Healthy People 2000 goals is 0.0003% of the US budget -- or -- to take it out of percentages $3 out of every $1,000,000.  


If a US lactation consultant made enough to have to pay $20,000 a year in taxes, just to give you a few examples:

$7646.36 would be allocated to the Social Security Administration
$1170.00 would be allocated to the Department of Agriculture
$1178.88 would be allocated to the Department of Defense
$488.48 would be allocated to the Department of Education
$149.70 would be allocated to USAID
$43.33 would be allocated to the Department of State
$1.57 would be allocated to research on infantfeeding/breastfeeding/lactation
$0.06 would actually be allocated to research that might actually result in some change to breastfeeding practices as opposed to breastfeeding substitutes or products.

So, again, would we really begrudge increasing that $0.06 that we might spend PER YEAR?  Or asking our policy makers to shift more of the other $1.51 spent on breastfeeding substitutes or products into more funding for research into how to improve direct breastfeeding and human milk feeding?
