Another example of the highly-charged, dramatic over-statements from
people who question the breastfeeding 'agenda':
Joan Wolf says:
"I wanted to understand how breastfeeding has come to be perceived as
the holy grail of health and formula-feeding as the equivalent of
giving a baby nicotine."
http://www.babble.com/baby/baby-feeding-nutrition/benefits-of-breastfeeding-baby-formula-feeding/
Please.
Just *who* is it who talks as if breastfeeding is the holy grail of
health (by which she means, I suppose, the only important thing to
do with health)? *Who* is it who says formula feeding is the
equivalent of giving a baby nicotine?
Who, and where, are the *weirdos* who would talk like this?
I very occasionally meet folk whose swivel-eyed 'advocacy' of
breastfeeding makes my toes curl, I hafta say....you know them, the
ones who feel able to judge other mothers harshly and vocally
according to how they feed, or who sneer unpleasantly at 'formula
feeders'.
But they are very, very rare (and even they would have the sense to
understand other factors influence health, and that formula is not
nicotine).
(As it happens, I find that sort of person on the 'other side' as
well - the ones who judge a mother harshly and vocally for
breastfeeding, and who sneer unpleasantly at them, too.)
I *resent* being thrown in to the extremist camp because I think
infant feeding is important.
JW goes on to say:
"I am cast as being against breastfeeding, but what I'm against is
using breastfeeding to make mothers feel bad about themselves."
Well, whaddaya know?
Hey! That's what I'm against too! But if I say I disagree with JW's
interpretation of the 'breastfeeding agenda' then somehow I am in
favour of making women feel bad????
