Hi Lea,
Doing some quick calculations, it seems this baby gained an *average* of
4 oz per week in 14 weeks. This is on the low side, as you know,
especially for a boy.
These situations are very tricky, because one wonders is it best to gain
weight slowly but be exclusively bf? or is it best to gain weight very
well, but you require supplementation to do so. One can make an argument
either way, I say. It is reassuring that the baby is healthy and
developmentally on target, and that the genetics of this baby seem to
favor slimness. However, even thin moms have plump babies.
What I would want to do, if this were my client, would be to assess just
exactly what is going on with feedings, latching, night feeds, pacifier
use, milk supply, other intervening factors such as medications, breast
anatomy, etc. I would want to see if we could make any adjustments so
that we could have a higher wt gain on breastfeeding alone, or adding
even some pumped milk if we could do that, and avoid formula use, if
possible.
I bet some adjustments can be made.
