Permission to post: at a recent LLL mtg., a mom with a 2 wk old baby and
damaged nipples showed me how her baby sometimes sleeps - with his mouth
open, tongue tip up on the roof of his mouth.
Has anyone seen this before? Significant? I'm suspecting a posterior
tongue tie but it isn't glaringly obvious.
Yes, babies who need to stabilize their breathing sometimes do this. And
yes it can go with other "midline" issues like tongue tie and/or
larnygomalacia. If the baby was on his back when he did it, that makes even more sense
since back sleeping may be "great" for SIDS modification among solitary,
nonbreastfeeding sleepers, but it's kinda lousy as a position for lots of
other reasons. Babies with reflux or laryngomalacia or tongue tie ( or all of
them) often have a lot of trouble sleeping comfortably and with stability
on their backs...
Peace,
Judy
