Jeannete, YES, the vast majority of tongue tied parents that I've encountered who reported speech problems as children (typically that they had therapy for and no longer had obvious issues) were native Spanish speakers and had difficulty with the "rr" trilled r sound that requires a lot of tongue tip mobility. My tongue tied husband never mastered that one in spite of four years of high school Spanish;-) So I agree, the native language has an impact, but again asking the parents specifically about their speech history should give you this information even if you are not familiar with all the particulars of their native language.
