Pumps don't make normal suction pressures with the wrong kits. The kits
and motors are co-designed, it's actually dangerous to use the wrong one
(pressures are too high)! Linda Pohl (IBCLC and engineer) measured this
a few years ago.
The reason Hygeia pumps are safe with Medela kits is that their lactina
clone is just that. It's been updated to smooth the suction curve and
(with the new valves) increase the maximum suction, but the basic specs
are the same. They could do that because the patent is expired. Ameda
still has patent protection for their kit design.
