Dear Lactnet Friends:
There are at least 9 different feeding surveys going on in the US. The
National Immunization Survey found that about 25% of breastfed babies got
some formula in the first 2 days of life. Another survey, authored by the
wonderful Laurence Grummer-Strawn in 2008, found that 41% of babies were
supplemented with formula in the first 2 days of life.
Drs Crivelli-Kovach and Chung, in their lovely article about breastfeeding
practices in hospitals in the Philadelphia Region (BF Medicine 2010) found
that the figure was about 80%!
All surveys are not equal.
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI, ANLC
