It's interesting to see that other professionals use side lying to
feed. I have been doing so for years. Actually, I do a bit of
each...sidelying and more lie back feeding. Basically, what I do is
have mother let baby do 'everything' as though breastfeeding. This
includes sking to skin, searching, hands, crawling up or down
depending on how she starts the positioning, and then offering the
bottle at the breast in the nursing position. For some babies, that
means very tummy down kind of like we see in
www.biologicalnurturing.com (can I say I really like when things come
along and get a name when i have been doing them for a long time, but
not really calling them anything. haha.) For some that means Dr.
Smilie's method then using the bottle. I do not call it pace feeding.
I call it "do everything with the bottle that happens if
breastfeeding" then explain what that includes. Since some mothers
are pumping we talk about how the milk flows...fast then slow...how
long it really takes to pump, not just the combined volume they
collected in 10 or 15 min, but that if the baby was taking that much,
it would be 10-15 min. 'per' breast. The feeding should mimic the way
the baby can control feeding at the breast. I use this method for any
reason a baby needs a bottle or mother chooses a bottle as an
alternative feeding method. I even have a modified method that is for
care providers that are not parents. The parents always remark how
much calmer their baby is while eating when they use my method and
that is all the convincing they need.

Ah, so nice to find a few minutes to read Lactnet. I am reading from
the latest and then backward to the ones previously, so I don't even
know where this thread started yet. Haha.

Best,
