I have been hoping in an answer about this from the Wise Ones, because
from what you describe I had thought of a possible bacterial infection
following the viral one, but I have no grounds on which to base my idea.
I have done a pubmed search: nothing came out for humans, but there were
titles which seemed to refer to possible consequences of the foot and
mouth disease on cows such as mastitis and decreased milk output. There
were no abstracts, so I could not get much knowledge, just the idea that
the connection between this virus and a subsequent bacterial infection
could exist, at least as an increased risk factor. After all this would
be the same idea for which otitis media is often treated with
antibiotics even if there is no proof of bacterial infection (so my
pediatrician explained to me).

I am curious about this and would be happy if someone could share an
opinion :-)

Thanks!
