The increase in weight was FAT mass, not lean muscle or organ mass, and the
intervention was short-lived The Valentine trial (AKA P. Meier's NICU)
(JPGN 1994) lasted only 2 weeks.
We want LEAN, long premies with big brains, not short, fat infants who will
develop obesity, hypertension, insulin-resistance and heart disease in
adulthood, like we used to produce.
Other longer trials have shown no difference
Dayanikli P et al. PAS 2004, San Francisco, Abstr # 2526 & #2194.
Other studies suggest concern regarding human milk post discharge:
¢RCT of preterm infants fed fortified human milk or preterm formula until
term CA
¢At term 3 groups:
—Nutrient-enriched formula without extra energy
—Standard formula
—Unfortified human milk
¢Results at 6 months corrected age:
—No differences in growth or body size
—Enriched formula group had less fat mass
—Standard formula group had higher fat mass
—Human milk group had lower lean mass and higher fat mass
Amesz EM et al. Optimal growth and lower fat mass in preterm infants fed a
protein-enriched postdischarge formula. J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr
2010; 50(2):200-207
