I received this from NAPNAP (National Assoc. Of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners). Geri Fitzgerald is on the USBFC and an PNP.

Dear BFE Sig members:

I attended this meeting and was heartened by the testimony given to the FDA by HMBNA, the CDC and Dr. Susan Landers of the Austin milk bank. The FDA came away with a good sense of the importance of breast milk to infants, especially premature infants. Please share this information with your moms. Some mothers groups were under the impression that the FDA was interested in regulating breastfeeding and the FDA emphatically denied this as a motivation. There are, however, groups on the internet which are buying and selling breast milk without screening donors and pasteurizing the milk. This was identified as the real problem and a mechanism to address this problem was not identified.

Best,

Geri

FDA decides not to regulate breast milk banks
An FDA expert panel reported Monday that breast milk donor banks have a "good system" and are doing well with their regulatory procedures. The FDA said it will not "enhance its role in donated breast milk" at present, although it could still get involved "in a reasonable way," noting that more study of the issue is needed.
