I believe that the Baby Cafe' program

box" or "community case for breastfeeding" that was spoken of hopefully in
the January 20 rollout  of the Surgeon General's Call to Action for
Breastfeeding

(between
minute 49 and minute 53).  Two cities with a big military community, El
Paso http://www.ttuhsc.edu/fostersom/obgyn/babycafe/  and San Antonio
http://nursing.uthscsa.edu/sababycafe/about.asp, are the second and third US
locations of Baby Cafe'.  Though Baby Cafe' originated in the UK, the Texas
Baby Cafe's have found the program a good fit to their communities (since
2008 in El Paso!).  The military may find that the Baby Cafe' model of
offering social and practical breastfeeding support on a drop-in basis works
at, or connected with, military bases.  I believe a facilitator from the El
Paso or the San Antonio Baby Cafe' would be a good choice to speak at the
annual conference.

I hope the Surgeon General will spread the word about drop-in centers like
Baby Cafe' to faith-based and other community groups.  Also, the Toolkit for
Faith-Based and Neighborhood Organizations from the White House's "Let's
Move!" obesity reduction program

(starting
on page 17) is helpful for developing breastfeeding support groups, but is
not visible from the homepage, and Dr. Benjamin needs to let the White House
know it's a missed opportunity -- maybe she can make sure it shows up on her

AMSUS is the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and BCUS
is a part of that organization that focuses on breastfeeding. BCUS stands
for Breastfeeding Coalition of the Uniformed Services.

They are looking for speakers to give talks at the annual conference this
year on how the military can implement the Surgeon General's Call to Action.

Please consider reaching out to this oft neglected but very important part
of the breastfeeding world. There are many women on active duty of
childbearing age who desperately need information and support to breastfeed
successfully while in the military.
