Hi all~

Would love to know if anyone is aware of any recent evidence re: the effect
of radiant warmers as it pertains to insensible water loss (IWL) in the
term, health newborn? I searched PubMed and also did a general search. Found
some refs from the 1970s and early 80s - but not much. There is a bit more
research re: impact on preterm infants, but it assumes long periods, e.g.
days to weeks under radiant warmer vs. incubator. That is not what I'm
looking for.

With the way too many babies are stuck under warmers (vs. skin2skin with
mother) in their first hours for assessments, post-initial-(often
unnecessary) bathing, etc and, for some, occasionally thereafter, I'm having
a hard time believing that no researcher has looked at the impact of this on
newborn weight loss. All the refs I found re: radiant warmers and IWL note
that extra fluids are needed to replace those lost via IWF, yet I can find
no research that has considered the effect of IWL on the newborn who is
supposed to receive lower volumes during the first 36-72 hours (and how it
may contribute to weight loss and supplementation).

Any info you're aware of would be appreciated. Thanks.
