As far as my reading goes, there are different ways to categorize ankyloglossia
- on anatomic appearence alone or anatomy plus functional deficits.
The categorization on anatomic appearence is used in different ways - one
depending on the lenght of the frenulum itself and the other on place of
frenulum attachment. The first model (based on lenght of frenulum)
is presented in some materials by Dr. Lawrence Kotlow (although he uses both) -
you can see his presentations here:
http://www.kiddsteeth.com/articles.html
The second one - based on placement of frenulum attachment AND function - is
more widely used and much more logical, because it is not only appearence that
defines a problem (or type 3 and 4 TT wouldn be such a pain in the butt). You
can easily find the Hazelbacker's tool which examines tongue appearence,
mobility and function. It is easy to find, just google it.
And you can see more photographs of the different types of TT in AAP's article
on ankyloglossia, in Dr. Kotlow's presentations and especially in Cathy Genna's
books and presentations - in her GOLD 2010 presentation there were very clear
pictures of normal and abnormal tongue movement and restriction.
Hope that helps - and as I am sure there is much more to learn, maybe there
would be other suggestions for you from the more experienced ones on the list.

Subject: Tongue Tie Categorization
I am looking for information on Categorization of Ankyloglossia. Are there
universal Diagnostic "Levels" or "Categories?" If so, where could I find
diagnostic criteria?
Thank you,
