No donor milk story I'm afraid, but I had a
client whose second child was discovered to have
a primary immune deficiency after she had weaned
him. He suffered repeated ear infections and and
hospitalizations for pneumonia but had remained
fairly healthy during breastfeeding. Once the
diagnosis was made, the mom succeeded in
re-lactating for him. The interval between
weaning and relactation had been too long for the
baby to be willing to resume nursing, so he was
breastmilk-fed with about 400 ml of mom's EBM
every day. His health improved enormously, but
after about 6 months, mom let things
slide. Infections returned, so she relactated
again, and once again his health improved until
she stopped expressing for him when he was about
2 years of age. He died of Hodgkins Lymphoma
aged about two and a half. A really sad scenario
to work with, and the mom had been so gallant in
relactating twice for him. She never regretted it.

Subject: donor milk to boost toddler immune system?
I'm on the board of the NW Mothers Milk Bank -
and we've been working for several years to
develop a donor milk bank here in Portland. Â But
I'm looking for specific information / references
/ stories on a specific topic around donor milk.
Here's the situation: Â 4 year old - has
struggled chronic infections, colds, etc. and has
had MANY repeated rounds of antibiotics. Â Mom
was not able to breastfeed her due to previous
surgeries. Â As a baby had failure to thrive due
to severe reflux. Â Many repeated visits to
immunologists, allergiest and ENT. Â She suffers
from a slow to progress immune system and is not
technically "immune compromised". Â Latest
strategy is to remove her adenoids and culture
her sinuses to see if she has resistances. Does
anyone have stories or specific references to
share of donor milk being used on a
toddler/preschooler to boost their immune system?
Obviously in a 4 year old this would mean
drinking it in a smoothie or something similar.
Thanks for your help! Scotti Weintraub
