I recently re-read an article (JHL I think) re candida and I think the 2
most predictive s/s were pain and shiny, red, flaky areola. So a couple
things come to mind. Does she have the red shiny or flaky skin? Was there a
period of pain-free nursing? Typically with candida, the bf goes well in the
beginning and s/s start later. If she had sore nipples early on, and nipple
trauma, then she might have bacterial infection. If this was a phone call,
and you have not seen them bf in person, and if there was any pain/trauma in
early days, then I would highly recommend an inperson visit. (If not with
you then with another skilled person). You might be surprised at how
sub-optimal some moms and babies are positioned and latched. Ouch! Or baby
could have a tongue tie for example.
