I totally agree. Cathy Genna DOES rock. Lovely description of cervical auscultation. I would highly recommend practicing your listening skills on infants with normal suck-swallow-breathe patterns before relying on it as a diagnostic tool though. Once you have a good feel for normal the abnormal will be VERY obvious. It is a fantastic tool for an IBCLC to have in her tool belt. I do not use it with every patient but if I suspect something is amiss with the swallow I always auscultate.
