So many times here on Lactnet there is what seems to be the almost obligatory
slam towards what might have happened in the hospital or NICU--regardless of
whether or not there is even a report of mismanagement or discouragement of
breastfeeding. Look back at the recent thread about low milk supply in an ex-36
wk infant. Nothing was mentioned about what happened in that mother-baby's
hospital course but, of course, omni-present hospital mismanagement must be
included though no evidence was included that the baby/mother's hospital course
was incorrectly managed. Then from time to time we also have the complaints
aimed at 3rd party reimbursement in general, nevermind that some of us (and that
is the arena I have worked in for the past 6+ years now) working long hours to
make sure that my families have what they need and linking them with
specialists, medical equipment, etc., while in the NICU and the immediate
transition to home life, the general tone here when someone decides to comment
is very derogatory. So, not all LLL leaders are wonderful and some mothers may
leave a group feeling their personal needs have not been met, and rightly or
wrongly, some may feel judged for the choices they make--it's a fact of life.
There are quite a few people on this list alone who have voiced quite strong
opinions over whether or not someone who is bottle-feeding her milk to her child
is actually breastfeeding. Want to open a smelly kettle of fish--let's bring up
immunization? Think about the sting of the comments and think before making
blanket statements. It might be nice if the same consideration spread throughout
the people here.
Thoughtfully,
Linda Madsen, RN
