A weight check is entirely different than doing pre-post feed weighing.

Subject: 24 hr. test weighs

I agree to the response of maybe not doing a test weight pre and post in a stressed often busy environment like a public clinic. Obviously weighing over a 24 - 48 hour period will give more accuracy in milk transfer. However I think we need to take in consideration that sometimes for certain families coming through our doors for a test weight gives us an opportunity to show a mother that may be doubtful in providing enough breast-milk for her infant. Allowing mother to see with her own eyes that baby gained 2-oz (any amt) after a feeding will put her at ease and give her the confidence to continue breast-feeding. I worked with a mother who was on the verge of supplementing with formula. She agreed to see me every 4 days for a wt check. Keeping this frequent contact and seeing the babies weight gain most definitely kept mother exclusively breast-feeding her beautiful infant son. From the begining all the signs of a good milk transfer were there however mother continued with her doubt. I know the scale made all the difference.
