Hi all,

For a couple of years (mainly after Cathy Genna´s visit) knowledge about
ankyloglossia is growing here in Spain. In Madrid we now actually have three
(wow) professionals who are willing to cut type II-IV tongue ties (type I
was never a problem). The pediatric surgeon who is doing most of the cases
(which add up to three or four a month) is routinely recommending that the
parents do massage under the baby´s tongue from 24 hours after the surgery
and during ten days afterwards. The massage he recommends is to stroke with
the fingertip from the floor of the mouth up to the tongue, from base to
tip. If you look at baby´s mouth sideways, it would be like drawing a "C"
starting at the bottom tip of it (which would be right behind the bottom gum
ridge) backover the floor of the mouth, up to where floor and tongue meet,
and then alongside the bootom side of the tongue from back to tip.
I asked him the porpouse of this and he said it is to prevent sinequies
(that is, the scarred tissue from sticking back together). It makes sense,
but I have not heard any of you with more experience speak about this
massage. And I have seen a few babies for whom this massage is painful and
they take weeks to get a good latch after the frenectomy when the massage is
being done.

Does it make any difference that he uses an electrical scalpel, and
therefore the babies get a cut *and *a burn? I mean, could this result in
more sinequies or a longer recovery time?

I´d love some input...

Warmly from Madrid,
Kika
