I really do have to comment on this snippet from Susan Burger's post.
"I think of the case of the donations of milk shipped to Africa......
The energy and money spent shipping milk from the US to Africa is
astronomically greater than doing the same thing in place. Furthermore, in
this case, most of the milk wasn't going to Africa anyway. So, it was
somewhat deceptive for the donors."
Milk shipped to Africa (Cape Town) has been more than extremely useful. We
do not have the donor base due to the ever increasing HIV risk that America
has and the milk has saved many premature babies lives. The milk has been
gratefully received and has increased the profile of the wonders of breast
milk to the medical profession better than we could ever have hoped. Our
milk bank is not able to meet the demand and babies go without due to the
lack of local donors. Our donor base is growing slowly but surely but still
not enough to meet the demand. The milk from the USA has been eeked out
to make it last as long as possible.
Just so you know that IBMP has done a wonderful job in getting donor milk to
Africa (Cape Town and Durban) and we are immensely grateful and always will
be.
