Hi Kathy,

In the Netherlands, IBCLCs who are a member of the Dutch professional lc
organisation can tell their clients to send the bill to the insurance
company.
Depending on the package they have (many different packages with many
different insurers), they will get a certain amount or the full consultation
reimbursed.
I'm not really sure what the additional value of the membership is, as the
admission to the professional organisation is not based on some kind of
quality check.
In fact, all of those who are certified IBCLCs can become a member, so in my
opinion, certification ought to be the decisive qualification for the
insurers.
This deal between the lc organisation and the insurers was made years ago,
although for some private lc's, the membership is just another amount to pay
for a small business...
Those lc's who work in organisations, don't always have this problem. It's
the institution that pays for the consultation, lc help being a marketing
strategy for other services.
Pplc's have to meet certain requirements, though, to be a member and
consequently to have their clients' consultations reimbursed.
Institution lc's don't really have to be a member and don't have to meet all
the availability and alternate-lc-during-holidays-obligations.
Ah... all the details in all the different countries... very confusing,
right?! ;-)

Bye,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands
