Hi Brenda, Glad you found my input helpful. Just wanted to say to you and
all lactnetters, when I say, "I would suggest....." that means mother can
agree to try or disagree; it's her call. I would discuss my reasonings, of
course. What I would be saying is if mother is making very little milk, and
is not yet (maybe won't) responding to galactagogues, then I would expect
baby will begin to refuse to breastfeed, if he hasn't already. Therefore, a
lactation aid will serve several purposes, the main 2 being keeping baby at
breast (i.e. breastfeeding) and helping with the supply and demand system. I
use the homemade lactation aid like Jean described, not the SNS or LactAid,
due to preference, ease of use, and cost issues. I do let the mother know of
these other devices.
I do absolutely understand the issue of cost, not wanting to hire a pump
after spending money on a personal pump. If you are the person counseling
mother, and it is before she has purchased a pump, you would discuss the
pros/cons of various pumps. If she has already purchased a personal pump,
and now needs a rental, and esp. if in the early postpartum period, what I
then say is something like this:
"I bet your friends and family are asking about what you or the baby might
need. You don't need a stroller yet, you don't need a high chair yet, but
you do need a rental breastpump (about $50 per month in Mississippi if mom
has the parts). I bet your friends and family would pitch in together to
rent you the pump." And I believe that they would.
Laurie -- p.s. my son got married last night!
