Stepheni,

I'm pretty low on sleep right now and therefore more blunt than usual
(which for me is saying a lot, LOL). So here's my reply to your
situation:

A) Congratulations on becoming an IBCLC!

B) Being a WIC IBCLC is in my opinion an extremely rewarding vocation,
and a great way to gain a lot of very valuable and varied LC experience

C) What they told you is utter nonsense.

I am one of 5 WIC IBCLCs in Miami Florida and none of us are nurses or
have nutrition backgrounds, etc. Prior to becoming an IBCLC I was a La
Leche League Leader. Our other 4 IBCLCs were all peer counselors prior
to becoming LCs.

So no, this is not nationwide. And in March I spoke about our program
(at their invitation) to the National WIC Association, so not only is
this not nationwide, the NWA actually applauds what we're doing in
Miami. I suggest that your state WIC coordinator speak to ours, or to my
boss. Email me privately if you'd like me to put you in touch with my
boss. Good luck!
