Currently BFing about 8 times per 24hrs
Positioning good.
Latch could stand to be a touch deeper, but it is not terrible.
Nipple slightly distorted upon removal.
10 seconds of NNS, about 7 min of NS, with obvious swallowing.
So, it seems as if she is now gaining about 5 1/2 oz per week the past
several weeks. Not stellar, but ok with a healthy baby meeting milestones, and
happy. If this is the first time you saw her, I would also keep in mind
that some weights not done by you on your scale ( assuming you have a digital
scale sensitive enough to pick up transfer) could be suspect. I was just in
a local MD office, for a second time mom with first-baby major hormonal
supply issues. Just for curiosity's sake, I brought my scale. MD scale
weighed little guy at 7 pounds 14 oz, and my scale, 4 seconds later, read 7
pounds, 11. ( Also, nurse almost wrote 8 pounds, 14. I've also had moms tell me
no one actually zeroes the scale before they put the baby on, or baby has
been weighing diaper and/ or clothing one week but not the next and that
doesn't get written down.) One piece of information I would like to see is:
how much milk does the baby transfer in those 7 minutes. If she transfers
3 oz ( I'm being arbitrary but in range I think) that is one picture- if
swallows are being heard, and baby is only moving an ounce or less, then we
have another possibility. Another component is baby's personality, whether
baby is hungry and cuing but not getting the response ( mom being told that
baby cannot be hungry again " so soon") or is baby just "contented and
previously losing" which I do see sometimes. Now baby may be on track, so it
makes sense to just keep gathering info and watch for a decent weight arc
since baby's milestones seem to be on track. Baby may have had birth issues,
tongue issues, that have somehow worked themselves partially out, or enough
out, to not being making the same impact they were earlier on. Jaws grow
forward, baby's mouth gets bigger, etc...
Glad this mom and baby have you to keep an eye on them now...:)
Just some thoughts,
Peace,
Judy
