Against my better judgement, I am trying to help a mother via email. For
the record, she did not come to me via LLL--I'm just one of those gals who
gets requests for help from various places...I'm sure you're familiar with
the type ; )

Baby is 8 months and mother is not currently lactating. She has 1600 oz (!)
of frozen donor milk from one mother and wanted my advice on how to get the
baby to take it as baby refused the donor milk. I told her to taste/smell
for soapy and gave her information about lipase. Mother reported that milk
seemed fine but on a lark decided to scald some of the thawed donor milk
(yes, I explained that to prevent the fat from breaking down, scalding needs
to happen before freezing). Well, she's decided that I'm a GENIUS because
her baby drank down 3.5 oz of the scalded milk happily. Yes, the refused
milk and the happily guzzled milk were from the same package of milk.
Obviously, lots of factors could be at play here with "fluke" being a
distinct possibility. Any other thoughts on this specifically? If she can
repeat the experiment, I'll report back for sure.

And now for the scary parts...

Mother reports that baby gained ZERO wt. between 4.5 and 7 mos: stayed at
15.2 lbs the whole time while on ABM (did combo feed up until 4 mos). Baby
then gained and was at 16.5 lbs., but is now down to 16lbs. I have
requested information on length, but no data yet. Baby dx with reflux, on
meds, and refuses feeds on a regular basis. Baby has never taken more than
24oz of abm/day and is getting solids (mother reported 12oz of squash
(!!!!!) and yogurt in addition to 24oz of abm for one recent daily intake).
Mother and many family members have reflux and so this is considered
"normal" for this baby. Mother reports that baby is active and alert.

The kicker (and I know what mothers report can be inaccurate and I certainly
don't have the complete picture, but still): Peds says baby is "fine" and
that mother is just worrying too much. This one kept me up at night!

Here's what I have already shared or plan to share with this mother:

-second opinion peds
-food allergies
-nutritional density of squash vs. abm/bm
-relactation info
-baby cleared of metabolic issues, genetic disorders, heart problems,
celiac?
-that lack of wt. gain, feeding refusal, and reflux are NOT NORMAL
-reflux is not a genetically linked disease, but the underlying cause could
be (celiac, eg)

Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Jessica Claire
