Posted w/ permission: Mom at 33 weeks gestation w/ Sickle Cell. She is
unable to take her medication; hydroxyurea during pregnancy. Prior to
pregnancy she was taking this medication and it kept her to about 2
Sickle Cell Crisis episodes per year. Now w/o it, she has had at least
5 hospitalizations for crisis during the pregnancy. As you may know,
these are very painful episodes. She really wants to breastfeed, but
has been told she cannot take hydroxyurea while breastfeeding.
According to Hale it is an L2, but then under "Pediatric Concerns," it
states: "None reported via milk, but extreme caution is recommended due
to overt toxicity of this product."
If anyone has experience with this condition/med and breastfeeding, I
would appreciate any input.
Thanks,
