When I say mild soap on lactnet I, too, am meaning the mom does not
necessarily have to use an anti-bacterial or perfumed soap, or even
what I would call a strong product like phisohex or something.
Chamomile soap would be one. But I am quite comfortable with Dove or
something like that.
As to how to help a mom who chooses not to use (or even cannot afford
to use) certain topical treatments or to see a practitioner who could
evaluate and treat the tongue tie: I discuss options, try various
positions, breast compression, maybe a shield. Mom may be able to
tolerate feeding at breast every other time, for example. Just
brainstorm between the mom and me as to what things might help her
situation. I have had many parents who had the means but chose not to
clip, and decided to pump and ebm-feed or wean. It is their choice,
even though it saddens me.
