Hi there. The NICU should have a breastfeeding and pumping policy, as well as a milk storage policy. Moms usually pump for 10 minutes before lactogenesis, and then after milk is in, they pump for 2-3 min past the time the milk flows well.  This is not a NICU policy, however, but it is what I have  learned over the year as being effective.  Pumping 8 times a day min with hospital grade pump. Kathleen Bruce RN IBCLC
