Dear all:
I was figuring out what to put up on the NYLCA website since so many "breastfeeding mothers" use formula -- and I settled on directing them to the FDA website which has formula recalls listed. If ever there were a reason to breastfeed, the number of recalls is one. Anyway, in looking through the news on the formula recall, lo and behold I discovered one of New York City's pediatricians making the lamest apologist excuses for bugs in formula.
Having lived in Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I actually LIKE certain bugs -- when cleaned and properly prepared. Termites fried in palm oil are extremely tasty and don't look like bugs when you eat them. Caterpillars are a bit harder and chewy if the chef doesn't cook them properly. Peanut sauce is the solution. I never quite brought myself to eat palm grubs.
Here's the difference, the bugs I ate in Africa were CLEANED and they hadn't been sprayed with who knows what pesticides and I was an ADULT with a fully developed (albeit damaged by formula) immune system.

Sigh -- what can one say when a PEDIATRICIAN who is supposed to be an advocate for infant's health, makes excuses? Didn't he read the part in his own AAP statement about EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding. Not one statement out of his mouth about that.
Best regards,
Susan Burger
