Occasionally I have seen a breastfeeding child become a type 1 diabetic. 
There is no reason to wean from the breast! In the 2100 century with all 
of our evidence-based guidelines on breastfeeding and infant nutrition, 
there is no excuse for an endocrinologist to recommend this.  I can 
understand the recommendation of not nursing at nite, but in reality, 
this could be worked with. But to not nurse during the day? That is 
foolish, non-evidence based, culturally insensitive, not to mention poor 
medical practice (and therefore unethical) given that a nursing toddler 
is healthier . As an example, viral gastroenteritis (such as norovirus, 
enterovirus, or rotavirus) is the sort of illness that can easily throw 
a type 1 diabetic child into diabetic ketoacidosis in no-time, which is 
a life-threatening condition. The endocrinologist needs to be reminded 
that the very best preventive measure for viral gastroenteritis is 
breastfeeding.
Plus, the amazing thing is that if the child doesn't nurse, he'll take 
cows milk, a culprit exposure associated with a higher risk of type 1 DM!
