I would also add that when a mother is using a nipple shield, be sure she
knows signs that baby is getting enough and that baby's weight is monitored
regularly.  While it may not be common, some babies do not transfer well
with the shield, resulting in reduced milk supply, less than optimal weight
gain.  I don't always see this happen, just sometimes.  I hate the
sometimes.
