Alicia,
This case sounds similar to one I saw a while ago. Baby had colic-type
symptoms from getting an oversupply of milk from mum. Good wt gain, wanting
to feed frequently, producing masses of wet and dirty nappies, and passing
lots of wind. I have often seen babies with "oversupply colic" fuss at the
breast as your baby does - I believe due to painful pockets of wind in
their bowel. As they start to suck, they get contractions in the bowel
which moves wind along and causes colic-type pain. This distracts them from
the feed and they pull away and cry. Mum often incorrectly interprets the
behaviour as frustration that not enough milk is coming.
In the particular case referred to above, we managed to control the
oversupply (usually done by restricting feeding and comfort sucking - one
breast only per feed, or one breast only for any feeds withing a period of
say 3 hours, then the other for the next 3 hours, etc), but not cure the
colic. This baby had had a particularly traumatic forceps delivery. It
turned out that this baby's neck vertebrae were out of alignment, and when
treated by a chiropractor (who specialises in treating babies and children)
the colic disappeared and the mother and her family doctor were amazed and
very pleased with the result. In your case, you mentioned about a traumatic
labour and stiff neck - sounds very similar to me. I suggest your mum find
a good chiropractor for this baby as soon as possible.
Hope this helps,
Joy Anderson, Australia (where oversupply is more common than undersupply!)
