I have seen LOTS of babies who have the requisite number of diapers and who are failing to thrive. Some babies that are gaining slowly are merely slow gainers. Some babies are gaining slowly because there is a problem. I will repeat again what I have said many times, Laurie Nommson-Rivers research suggests that diapers should not be used as the sole indicator of intake. My own data suggest that they really are of little value after the first week unless the baby is beyond merely failure to thrive and has entered into "starving" territory.
