Quite unrelated to the mother`s surgery which was some time ago, did this
mother by chance have dental treatment recently.
I had a similar experience some time ago and the only event that could
explain sudden refusal of breast milk even when given in the bottle, was
that the mother had received local anestethic for dental work. It wore off
within about 48 hours and the baby returned to the breast as if nothing had
happened.
This baby might have been conditioned by a changed taste in the milk which
makes him reject the breast even before he takes a taste. So it might help
if the mother just lies or sits with him skin to skin at the breast when he
is not hungry so that he associatedsthe breast with a hug and cuddle not
just food.
In haste, my house in the summer is something between Grand Central Station
and a youth hostel!
