I've heard that consuming lecithin, which is a natural fat emulsifier can help women with recurring plugged ducts. Also, reducing the amount of saturated fats may help as well. The recommended dosage for lecithin is 1 tablespoon 3 or 4 times daily. Foods that contain concentrated amounts of lecithin are organ meats, red meats, and eggs. I know this won't work if the mom has a special diet so she may want to take a different approach. Although it is painful mom should be encouraged to remove the plug or in this case strings as soon as possible.
Hope mom finds some comfort soon.
