LeAnne All of this pumping stuff is related to our work a day world, I believe, but, working in the military system, many of the wives of soldiers, thankfully, don't need to return to work, which is a blessing, with the dad's being deployed at intervals. The mom's are frequently under the impression, though, that they 'need a pump', and I am quick to remind them, that, if they are with their baby the majority of the time, that they really do not need a pump, unless, they want it for occasional pumping, or for convenience, once the milk supply is well established. Sometimes I think that they are relieved to actually hear this! I always teach hand expression, with the advice that many moms get very efficient at hand expression, and don't even need to use a pump! Just showing them how to do it, before pumping, or breast feeding, helps 'the milk to get started flowing', and teaches them how to become efficient at hand expression, by practicing. The female active duty soldiers, on the other hand, are issued an active duty pump, for their return to work, and definitely need the pump for regular pumping, once returning to work, at 6 weeks.
